Our world is becoming more and more environmentally friendly these days and it’s doing great things for the environment. One of the biggest problems we face now is trash. Throwing things away in your wheelie bin is obviously something that can’t be avoided, but it doesn’t mean that it can’t be greatly reduced. There are many methods that can be used these days to try to reduce how much waste we produce. Not only is it beneficial for the environment, but it’s also beneficial for your wallet.
Recycle and Re-Use
Don’t throw away usable items. This creates so much waste every year. A person is bored with something and they simply throw it away. The item end up in a landfill and helps contribute to the waste problem. Instead, sell your items, donate them to a thrift store, or donate them to people in need.
There are so many things you can do with unwanted items that throwing something away should be the worst case scenario. Think twice before throwing away items that someone else could use. Even if you don’t want to make the effort to sell something, giving it away to places like shelters can help out a lot.
Why let something perfectly good go to waste? However, clothing that is ripped or items that are broken should be thrown away. They have no use and giving them away to organizations will just make more work for them as they will then have to throw the items away themselves.
Buy Environmentally Friendly
Try to buy items that are environmentally friendly. This means items that have packaging that is purposefully packaged light to require as little as possible waste or items that are good for compost. Many brands now are aware of their customer’s demands and have started to package their products in biodegradable packaging or in limited packing. Avoid buying items that have a lot of unnecessary packaging. This only worsens the problem. It takes up so much space when it isn’t even needed. Biodegradable products are great because you don’t have to feel guilty about throwing the packaging away. It’s already started the process in composting itself which will greatly reduce the amount of waste.
Get a Recycle Bin
Recycling is vital if we want to sustain our planet. It is one of the easiest things to do, but a lot of people still ignore it. Get a recycling bin in addition to your wheelie bin and throw away items made out of things like paper and plastic. Items that are recycled go on to make other products which is something we need to do. If we keep using the same products over and over, no new ones are being created. If everything gets thrown away, then new materials will have to be made and that will worsen our waste problem. There is no reason to not recycle. Place your bins right next to one another so it will be as easy as choosing one bin over the other.
Buy used products. This is the complete opposite of getting rid of goods like it was mentioned before. Instead, seek out used goods from others. You are helping the waste problem by not purchasing new products that are unnecessary. Buy items that already exists to help prevent them getting thrown away. Think about the fact that any used item you bought could have ended up in a landfill taking up space when it wasn’t needed. Another benefit is that used items don’t have packaging on them like a new item would have. You are helping combat the problem in another way as well!
Keep Using It!
Lastly, try to keep your products as long as possible. If you’re unsure about an item, don’t buy it. If you don’t need to replace something, don’t do it. Holding onto your products as long as possible helps you avoid creating waste from buying new products with a lot of packaging and from disposing of old products. Some things can’t be resold and will have to just be disposed of. These are generally bigger items so try to hold on to them since they will be a major waste contributor once you are done with them.
